During "London Craft
Week 2016", Professor Wang Dongling was invited to deliver a live
calligraphy performance in the Rotunda at the British Museum. As an internationally
renowned artist, Mr. Wang has shuttled back and forth, and left his graceful
production on the world stage. It was indeed a global art event that Mr. Wang
personally performed at the British Museum.
Started with "Plum Blossom", a traditional Chinese national music played with flute, Mr. Wang wrote down a total of 261 Chinese characters in cursive style with ink and customized long-holder brush. The whole grand and spectacular performance lasted for 28 minutes, with ups and downs. People were crowded around, attentively staring at every movement of the brush, while Mr. Wang stayed calm all the time, without revealing a bit of his emotions. Snake racing, horse galloping, waves roaring and storms raging, all such were rolled out under the brush tip. The momentum and the charisma availed the audience with an unprecedented visual feast between the realism and impressionism.
Upon completing the art works, Mr. Wang summarized his feeling, "We may understand the calligraphy by considering it a piece of art work!" His words were brilliantly nuanced. As a student of Professor Wang's at Chinese Academy of Fine Arts, I was honored to have the chance to appreciate his dance-like movements closely. Even after he made the final inscription, I was still immersed in the process, all mesmerized. Especially after all was finished, I paced around, admiring this calligraphic work from different angles. What I felt was an air silently hanging over the Rotunda of the British Museum, intertwined with his master piece. The "paint" was abstract and intangible, filled with various artistic elements, which needed us to constantly interpret and appreciate.
This feast was far from over. The shock was profound for the entire audience in London. In this multicultural metropolitan, the visitors were still greatly inspired and baptized. Old or young, everyone observed intently. I believe that arts are self-explanatory. Regardless of whether they read Chinese characters, they can perceive the repeated impact and collision from artistic elements. Each viewer has their unique experience toward such visual feast. Mr. Wang has been deeply appreciated for presenting the world such a great gift of Chinese culture!
